Dr. Yonghao (倪永浩) Ni (University of New Brunswick)
Dr. Ni is internationally recognized for his research and commercial application relating to wood chemistry, pulp and paper processes, integrated forest biorefinery, and cellulosic material.
Dr. Ni is a Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemistry, the Director of the Limerick Pulp and Paper Centre and the Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of New Brunswick (UNB). Dr. Ni started his career at UNB in 1991 as a research engineer. In 1992, he was appointed as the NSERC Industrial Research Chair (Associate Chair) in Pulping Technology and promoted to Associate Professor in 1996 and to Professor in 2000. He was awarded a Canada Research Chair (CRC, Tier 1) in 2002, and it was renewed in 2009 for another 7 years.

Major Contributions:
Dr. Ni has an outstanding record of carrying out both fundamental and applied research, and has co-authored 322 refereed papers, and 21 patents/patent applications and authored 141 publications in conference proceedings.
The research outcome of Dr. Ni and his team has had significant impact on the commercial practice such that Dr. Ni has provided consulting services to 33 companies/mills in North America, Europe, and Asia.
He and his team have developed numerous technologies and many of them have been commercialized, for example, innovative technologies for peroxide bleaching of mechanical pulps, the applications of high-yield pulp (HYP) to the production of various high quality coated and un-coated paper products, the development of the Conductive Paper Technology (CPT) and the production of cellulose paper based Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) packaging products.
Dr. Ni has directed research projects for 74 Undergraduate students, 65 Graduate students, 15 Research Assistants/Associates, 62 Postdoctoral Fellows/Visiting Scholars.
Outside his academic duties, Dr. Ni has been very active in providing services to both the scientific and industrial communities, including funding agencies, such as NSERC, technical associations, organizing and program committees of national/international conferences and consulting to industry.
Awards and Recognition:
Dr. Ni has received 32 awards/honours/scholarships from Canada, U.S.A., China, and Australia including: Merit Award (University of New Brunswick 2015); International Collaboration Award (Hunan Province China 2013); David Wetherhourn Award (TAPPI, USA 2011); Howard Rapson Memorial Award (Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada 2010); Douglas Atack Award (Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada 2008, 2007, 2005, 2004, 1999); Bantrel Award in Industrial Practices (Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering 2008); Syncrude Canada Innovation Award (Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering 2004); John S. Bates Award (Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada 1999).
He is a Fellow of the Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada (PAPTAC), the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC), and the International Academy of Wood Science and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Pulp and Paper Science and Engineering.
