Professor Jing Ming Xu (University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario)
Professor Xu is cited for his significant contributions to the field of Semiconductor Quantum Electronics. He is an internationally known and respected microelectronics researcher, and his work has pioneered new enabling technology for future opto-electronic integrated circuits.
Educational Background
Professor Xu took his M.Sc. in Physics from Drexel University, 1984, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, 1987. He has been with the University of Toronto since 1987.
Career Development
Professor Xu is a Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto. He holds the James M. Ham Industrial Chair in Opto-electronics, a position jointly sponsored by the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Bell Northern Research and University of Toronto.
Professor Xu is the principal investigator of the Ontario Laser and Lightwave Research Centre and the Ontario Centre for Material Research. In 1995, he was awarded the Steacie Prize, one of the most prestigious honours in Canadian science, focusing in particular on exceptional young researchers. He was nominated for the title of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Fellow in 1996.

Professor Xu has an international reputation. He has been invited to teach at various Universities in the USA, Japan, France, Korea, India, China and Canada.
Professor is a consultant for many companies: among them the Bell Northern Research Ltd. (Canada, USA, and UK), Yokohama R & D Labs, Furukawa Electric Inc. of Japan, ITS Electronics, Spar Aerospace, COM DEV of Canada. He is the Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Electronic Devices from 1992,
Other Honorary
Professor Xu has written over 140 publications, and has had 9 patents issued, with 4 pending. He has taught 12 masters’ students and 4 doctoral students, and currently supervises a number of visiting postdoctoral scholars.
His administrative abilities included serving as chair of the Canada US Workshop on ‘Frontiers in Quantum Electronics’ in 1996, Co-Organizer of the NATO ARW on ‘Future Trends in Microelectronics’, 1994-95.
