2019 Award Recipient

Dr. Xuemin (Sherman) Shen (Wireless Communication and Networking)

Dr. Xuemin (Sherman) Shen, Professor at the University of Waterloo, is internationally recognized for his ground-breaking contributions to the field of wireless communication networks. For thirty years, his research has led to innovative networking algorithms and protocols for technology development, and new analytical techniques and mathematical models for the international research community.

In mobile communications, better service quality and higher network resource utilization are conflicting goals in the presence of system dynamics due to multimedia data traffic and user mobility. With an emphasis on improving the understanding of fundamental trade-offs between performance and cost, Dr. Shen brings important insight, significant diligence, and unique perspectives to the field, leading to the development of new techniques and engineering solutions. He has constructed ingenious mathematical models to characterize complex relationships among network control variables and performance measures, and has developed novel network control and service provisioning algorithms and protocols to achieve better trade-offs.
